PhonePe · Payments and insurance · McCann
You don't beat a crowded category by joining its argument.
The premise
Cheaper, faster, easier.
The brief
PhonePe wanted to be synonymous with insurance, starting with four-wheeler motor cover and building toward health and life. In a market thick with insurers and aggregators, "cheaper, faster, easier" was the price of entry, not a way to lead.
The truths
Consumer.
Insurance is necessary and nobody wants to touch it. It's an ordeal you put up with. Agents give reassurance but take control. Digital gives control but can take away reassurance.
Product.
PhonePe already behaved differently: multilingual, self-inspection, opt-in not opt-out, no needless calls. A philosophy: build insurance customer-out.
Category.
Everyone argued why to buy from them. Nobody challenged how buying insurance itself worked.
The leap
Transform buying insurance from dread to delight, challenging the category's status quo rather than competing inside it.
Insurance your way.
Handing the buyer back what the category kept taking away.
